To be fair, most papers include abstracts that try to give that "simplest explanation possible". Though, as others have pointed out, these papers are meant for communication between researchers and not general consumption. I do think there's a problem with how research gets shared more generally though. I wish there were more scientifically literate writers at that boundary, because unfortunately, there aren't enough hours in the day for researchers themselves to fill that role.
