I stopped reading the press release when I read "yum" and "rpm" -- this thing needs Ubuntu as the build-OS btw...
- kondor6c 12y agoWhy? RPM based distributions are running in the majority of companies, and VMWare targets companies that can afford to pay it's licensing structure.
- wernercd 12y agoINFIDEL! Don't you know that Ubuntu is the One True distro? All others are a sham! REPENT OR DIE! DURKA DURKA UBUNTU JIHAD!
- icebraining 12y agoThen why does it require Ubuntu?
- kondor6c 12y agoI don't know, poor documentation? the toolchain check works for me on Fedora 20. I think it was a silly reason to stop reading the article so early at the mention of "yum"
- mdekkers 12y agoI don't like RPM or Yum. In my experience with using it, it has usually done more harm than good. What other companies use is up to them, but it isn't suitable for me. Argumentum ad populum is a fallacy.
- untothebreach 12y agoSure, ad populum is a fallacy when you are arguing a point, but when you are trying to decide on a toolchain to use, why wouldn't you go with the one that most of your customers use? You might like another toolchain better (and I happen to agree with you about rpm), but that doesn't necessarily mean it is objectively better.
- mdekkers 12y agoI didn't argue about it objectively being better, I argued that it isn't suitable for _me_ - given the downvotes though, It appears that I am stupid and don't understand my own use-cases, and the general population on HN knows much better what I need.
- eropple 12y agoI downvoted you not because of your disagreement, though I think you're wrong, but because of your peculiar insistence on self-martyrdom. It doesn't improve your argument and leads only to meta-complaint threads that generally don't go anywhere.
- untothebreach 12y ago(i did not downvote you) This was my interpretation of your comment, my apologies if it is incorrect: "I don't like YUM and RPM, and others shouldn't use popularity as a reason to use something" Which I agree with. However, in this case, I think that if, in fact, RPM is popular among VMWare's customers, choosing that toolchain in order to make their new product more attractive to their existing customers is totally valid.

- wernercd 12y agoWhats funny... is if you read some of the comments, it seems Ubuntu IS the base OS: https://lwn.net/Articles/641152/ https://lwn.net/Articles/641152/
- mercurial 12y agoThe comments only say that it is the OS you need to build the distro.
- Igglyboo 12y agoFirst off I think you mean Debian not Ubuntu (Debian is the base for Ubuntu). Secondly, RHEL and its derivatives are far more popular in the business world than Ubuntu and its derivatives. Ubuntu is pretty much only popular in the desktop linux space.
- kirushik 12y agoIt's not completely true. For websites Debian+Ubuntu is ~twice more popular than RedHat+CentOS: http://w3techs.com/technologies/details/os-linux/all/all http://w3techs.com/technologies/details/os-linux/all/all
- Alupis 12y agoThis stat is skewed by the default instance on things like EC2 being Ubuntu or Debian (should note that EC2 is built on RHEL/CentOS). There's an awful lot of people's blogs and one-off websites running on Ubuntu or Debian, sure. Those aren't really "business" use cases.
- Igglyboo 12y agoAlso that stat is only measuring "websites". As far as my company goes, the vast majority of our servers are not internet facing, I'm sure this is similar elsewhere.
