The streets of most cities in South Europe are covered by deciduous trees. IMHO, it is the best way to make the cities walkable in summer while not preventing the sun to warm the streets in winter. Also, cities with trees on the streets are beautiful. Of course, that mean that the council has to spend money taking care of that trees.
