A paradox of a safer society is that tragic acts like child abductions make more news than they would if they were more commonplace, inflating the perception of the threat.
People feel that the threat is greater in fact because it is so much rarer.
- researcher88 11y agoChild abduction by strangers is extremely rare and around 100 per year in the US although that may be an outdated number. The one stat I just checked said 515 stranger abductions between 1990 and 1995. And that was when free range children were far more common than today.
- abandonliberty 11y agoOverprotective parents will claim that's a result of their actions. Also, as less parents allow their children to roam, the risk to the remaining ones increase as there are a smaller pool of children readily abductible.
