Can't read the article yet, but I'd put money on Palantir(1)
(1) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palantir_Technologies http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palantir_Technologies
- gerty 11y agoI did read through it and they tracked it back to Recorded Future [1]. [1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recorded_Future https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recorded_Future
- solaris999 11y agoWhy does wikipedia link them with Palantir (and vice versa)? Is it just because they seem to be providing similar products or is there more to it?
- kissickas 11y agoSomeone on the talk page brought up the same point. "The only discernible connection is that both had In-Q-Tel as an early investor, as did numerous other companies (none of which are listed as related, nor should be they be)." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Recorded_Future https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Recorded_Future
- cubecul 11y agoWhat do you think Palantir does that would have them scanning FB chat?
- tolkienfanatic 11y agoPalantir does tons of government and military work.
- cubecul 11y agoDoesn't answer my question deeply enough.

- pjc50 11y agoMilitary == antiterrorism == SELECT * FROM chat WHERE text CONTAINS "jihad"
- RodericDay 11y agoalso "inequality" and "capitalism"
- rev_bird 11y agoBig data analytics is their bread and butter – if they had a way to analyze Facebook messages for patterns and predictively useful metrics, I'm sure they would.
- cubecul 11y agoAFAIK not analytics, but an interface that makes exploring data easier for analysts
- diminoten 11y agoThey do analytics as well.
- Bedon292 11y agoThey are mostly about exploring the data yes, but they also do some data mining in the content in order to make connections. They attempt to pull out names and link them together and things along those lines. I think they would be far more interested in mining all of the friendships to do the network analysis than the content of the chats.
- ryporter 11y agoWhy was this comment voted down? It challenged an uninformed speculation based on the title of a speculation.
- mirzap 11y agoHi I'm sorry for the inconvenient but we are recieving a huge amount of traffic.
- ryan-c 11y agoOne CIA funded company that is definitely scanning Facebook chats is Facebook. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In-Q-Tel#Software https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In-Q-Tel#Software
- mikeyouse 11y agoIt was pointed out above, but the In-Q-Tel involvement in Facebook is seriously tenuous; The second round of funding into Facebook ($US12.7 million) came from venture capital firm Accel Partners. Its manager James Breyer was formerly chairman of the National Venture Capital Association, and served on the board with Gilman Louie, CEO of In-Q-Tel, a venture capital firm established by the Central Intelligence Agency in 1999. One of the company's key areas of expertise are in "data mining technologies". So the evidence for an investment is that Facebook's lead investor for their Series A was the Chairman of the NVCA, of which the CEO of In-Q-Tel was also a member (along with 7 other prominent VCs). That's it.. an investor was on a board with the CEO of In-Q-Tel. None of Facebook's SEC filings ever showed a single dollar from In-Q-Tel and they're not shy about publicizing what they've invested in: https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/in-q-tel/investments https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/in-q-tel/investments
- ryan-c 11y agoInteresting, I'd heard it mentioned a number of times and I just assumed it was true.
