- visarga 12y agoI have no idea who Brooks is, and liked the essay. It has excellent expressions like: "a moral vocabulary", "It is easy to slip into a self-satisfied moral mediocrity. You grade yourself on a forgiving curve" and "reason and compassion are not strong enough to consistently defeat selfishness, pride and self-deception. We all need redemptive assistance from outside." These resonate as true for me.
- eli_gottlieb 12y agoThere is no content. It's moralistic-sounding waffle that doesn't even manage the genuine moralizing of, "The Bible prohibits so-and-so" or "You should do more for the Third World".
