I wonder if using the hundreds if not thousands of twitter api credentials checked in on public repos, one could mitigate against things like this? Though I suspect companies not in the jurisdiction of the US or its "partners" will probably be more likely to get away with an approach like this if caught or public about it, while still providing value added services based on walled gardens like facebook and twitter.
