Missouri trying to ban food stamp recipients from buying steak and seafood
- therobot24 12y ago> "The intention of the bill is to get the food stamp program back to its original intent, which is nutrition assistance," That's an interesting way of interpreting the law. Reminds me of House of Cards when Underwood and company were trying to find a way to criticize the teacher's union by echoing "disorganized labor".
- Rhapso 12y ago| "I have seen people purchasing filet mignons and crab legs with their EBT cards," he said. "When I can't afford it on my pay, I don't want people on the taxpayer's dime to afford those kinds of foods either." That worries me a little. This strikes me as more born of Representative Brattin's insecurities than any real concern for the poor.
- nickthemagicman 12y agoI think instead of trying to criticize government programs that only take 3% of federal taxes and provide us a safety net, how about we look at programs that take up 40% of our taxes and are bloated as hell and full of dirty kickbacks and lobbying...like the freakin defense industry...There might be some bloat we could cut there, like the fact that we have more aircraft carriers than the ENTIRE rest of the world combined. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_aircraft_carriers_by_country http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_aircraft_carriers_by_co... It's like a magicians trick. Look at this hand while the other hand is robbing us blind.
- robotnoises 12y agoRepublicans aren't wrong in thinking that there are people out there abusing the system. The question is, though, how much should we care? Food stamps help a lot of people.
- cpursley 12y agoSteak and seafood is not the issue; It's junk food. But junk food won't get banned because the manufactures benefit from the very same farm subsidy program (corn crop subsidies).
