Two things would help online voting tremendously: 1) Open-source code. That's how you find the bugs and build confidence. 2) Opt-in privacy. Ballots could be like Facebook-posts - public by default, with optional privacy. After the election closes, the results would be posted on the web where everyone who voted publicly could verify that their own vote was counted correctly.
