For Geekammo we went entirely open, and it was great with great contributions (https://github.com/geekammo/MicroView-Arduino-Library https://github.com/geekammo/MicroView-Arduino-Library) from the community. With Ninja Blocks we were only open on the hardware and client software (not the server).
