Maybe one reason, but not the number one reason... I mean it took Microsoft ~5 years just to update from IE6 to 7. That alone can explain their downfall. They waited until developers had almost 6+ years to use and evangelize a non-IE browser, and by then they just kept falling behind. Lack of extensions was more like the nail in the coffin than the ultimate cause of death for IE.
