I didn't get to go to Stanford. So, when I got my rejection letter, I replied with "I reject this rejection" like in the Snopes story. Then went to talk to the admissions folks, who thought that I had literally hopped on a plane and flew half the planet just to make good on a joke (I was already in the US for work actually). Ended up working with a Stanford prof for a semester, after which I decided I was done with academia.
