I don't think the LHC is breaking because it will kill everyone. Science seemed to conclusively decide that there was 0% probability of that happening. As another explanation, that leaves some type of external force preventing the LHC from working. Perhaps if we are living in a computer simulation discovering the Higgs Boson could help reveal the exact nature of that simulation, threatening the very existence of our universe.

In that case, why would 'they' sabotage LHC in obscure ways? Why not just completely destroy LHC with an earth quake or something?

  I think it was Eliezer Yudkowsky who commented that if it only took two days to start the LHC spinning it would have blown up by now. Also, I'd be surprised if our overlords are actively observing us, I would think that "the Higgs Boson is undiscoverable" is just a condition of the universe and the universe itself just adapts to prevent it from being observed, rather than some guy floating on a cloud saying "ok, this time we are going to have a bird drop a baguette."
