Yes, actually I find it hilarious that the JVM at the time had an aggressive garbage collector, but a relatively weak optimizer (it should have optimized out the call to this.getSize()).
Since the VM apparently does optimization now, perhaps that won't get eliminated until the code path is hot, i.e., after a few thousand calls to the method.
