Many anecdotes here, and no real data. Much like all of the world does not live this way, I assure you all of SF does not live this way. As one who does "get out" from time to time, I can assure you there are a healthy number of people socializing all over the city. There are also plenty of people who make the most of the outdoors. Try visiting a well-marked trail within 20 miles of SF on a weekend. Not exactly "away from it all." Agree with you that this article picks a very narrow view and creates false dichotomies.
