Platforms versus modules.
- Crito 12y agoWhat is that supposed to mean? Software is software, and a great deal of GPL software is currently in the hands of consumers.
- Karunamon 12y agoTerribly reductive. An operating system is not a library is not a toy program. A great deal of (good!) proprietary software is currently in the hands of consumers too. So?
- Crito 12y agoI think you might be responding to the wrong comment? I didn't say anything about proprietary software, or about one being better or worse than another.
- Karunamon 12y agoNope. What is that supposed to mean? Software is software Different classes of software exist with different licensing concerns.
- Crito 12y agoI am well aware of that. Let's take a step back: >>> For (B), that's a good thing. Nowadays, the GPL merely prevents software from having widespread use. >> Bizarre claim. Doesn't seem to have affected Linux/Android or git itself from achieving widespread use. reply > Platforms versus modules. I don't understand what the last line means. I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with it, because I don't know what it means in the first place.
- Karunamon 12y agoOkay - first claim: GPL prevents software from having widepsread use. Rebuttal: Didn't impact Android, Linux, or Git. Operating systems and developer-only tools are special cases and are not relevant to the general claim of "GPL preventing widespread use".
- cocoablazing 12y agoI don't accept the argument: "Software is software". Why is GPL better than all other licenses, for all software?
- Crito 12y agoI did not say that GPL is better. I am confused about what you mean by "Platforms versus modules." You seem to be distinguishing between two things, but I cannot see what they are.
- cocoablazing 12y agoThree orders of magnitude.
- Crito 12y agoEither I need more sleep, or you are being deliberately obtuse, because I have no fucking idea what that comment is supposed to mean. Three orders of magnitude of what? What is being measured? Do you mean that platforms are bigger than modules?
- cocoablazing 12y agoIt could be users, contributors, time, money, or lines. Most or all of these apply to the difference between linux/git and average software. I don't accept it as an axiom that the biggest open source project in the world should be licensed the same as something in the first percentile of (pick one). What I meant is that the software is used differently, and it is developed differently. It seems obvious to me that the ideal licensing for software that is vastly different from these examples of gargantuan/universal FOSS might not be GPL.
