I was using the wifi at starbucks recently. While both my MacBook Pro and my iPhone were associated with the WiFi, I was unable to ssh into my (jailbroken) iPhone, nor could I ping it. I expect that the access point prevents devices on its networks from communicating with each other. That can prevent such snooping but in my case it prevented me from getting my work done.
