I did notice the point about apt-get as being broadly applicable. However, thanks to Fink I have apt-get on OSX which works dandy for almost everything I've tried to install. You wouldn't have mentioned it if you hadn't run into problems, so I would imagine there are probably some pretty rough edges around native libraries. As such, I considered that those comments must also be specific to native programming.
