> Dont Talk to Cops
> Mr. James Duane, a professor at Regent Law School and a former defense attorney, tells you why you should never agree to be interviewed by the police.
- SilasX 12y agoThanks, but I'll continue to report crimes and assist canvassers looking for anyone who saw a suspect. "But he obviously didn't mean that!" Then why the extreme repetition of "never"?
- girvo 12y ago> Then why the extreme repetition of "never" Because if you're the "wrong" colour or class, even reporting crimes or assisting canvassers can get you in trouble.
- dghf 12y agoOr the "right" colour and class: viz Christopher Jeffries, a (white) landlord and retired teacher, somewhat eccentric but otherwise respectable, who was arrested for the murder of his tenant (and vilified in the national press) after volunteering what he thought might be relevant information about the night of her disappearance. (He was later released without charge and won substantial libel damages from a number of newspapers.)
- praptak 12y agoI would seriously consider reporting anything non-lethal in US, see "Good Samaritan Backfire or How I Ended Up in Solitary After Calling 911 for Help": https://medium.com/human-parts/good-samaritan-backfire-9f53ef6a1c10 https://medium.com/human-parts/good-samaritan-backfire-9f53e...
- edc117 12y agoThat story had a bit of an exaggerated feel, but I also got the feeling there was quite a bit of truth as well. Sad to read.
- Torgo 12y agoThere is a corollary to "don't talk to cops" which is "if you do talk to cops, minimize the encounter" closely followed by "always obey direct order from cop to leave" and concluding with "if you are incarcerated, shut up until you're completely out of confinement."
- baddox 12y agoNo, he meant that too. I haven't watched the video for a few years, but I believe he explicitly uses that scenario as one example.
- SilasX 12y agoHe explicitly says not to report crimes? Note that he talks to a cop in the video.
- baddox 12y agoAgain, I haven't watched the video for several years, but I thought I remembered him using the example of a police officer coming to an apartment complex and asking residents questions about a recent reported crime. I don't think reporting crimes came up, and it probably doesn't apply, since when you call 911 you (as far as I know) do not talk to police officers.
- SilasX 12y agoIt applies. Again, note how many "nevers" he gives and how exceptionless his advice is. Is the idea that, when the police follow up, you keep saying, "sorry I can't talk to you even though I want your assistance; give me that 911 lady again"?
