Yeah, I think I program with a lot of passion. However, after I've worked for not-too-much-more-than 8 hours in a day I force myself to go home. And when I'm home I make an effort to stop thinking about whatever problem was on my mind. Sometimes having an open source side-project can help with this tremendously. The author is definitely establishing a false dichotomy here. Just because you would enjoy doing something for 16 hours straight, doesn't mean you have to.
