- mseebach 17y agoLeap seconds aren't implemented, they're announced: The International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS) announces the insertion of a leap second whenever the difference between UTC and UT1 approaches 0.6 s, to keep the difference between UTC and UT1 from exceeding 0.9 s. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leap_second http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leap_second UT1 is the astronomical time. So far, there are 24 leap seconds. Also, I got it wrong: Leap seconds aren't the difference between GMT and UTC, but between UTC and e.g. GPS or International Atomic Time.
