Real estate development is something I would personally love to do with my life. I was a realtor, a property manager, and attended a week long course specifically to become a developer, and what I learned is this:
1. Projects take 18+ months to complete
2. You will be a "junior" for years before anyone gives you any creative control or real money
3. Projects are hell.
Expanding on 3, I've been told Real Estate Development is like putting out fires all the time and at the end of the day you're just glad you have something standing at all.
(To compare it to coding, think about debugging a program where every step you take to look at the code takes days or weeks .... you're filing paperwork or talking to the mayor or waiting for an investor or client to make a decision or fixing a contracting/structure error)
If you're willing to invest years of your life working 80 hour weeks putting out fires and having headaches as a junior developer, then someday you might go somewhere as a real estate developer.

I actually seek jobs that involved putting out fires. I work best on my feet, thinking quickly, with lots of varied stimuli. I'm getting sick of doing slow office-based stuff, I spiral downwards when I have too much time to think. Of course, it's stressful putting up all that money and then things out of your control can tank (economy). That's business, though.
