Words to live by:
"There are, it has been said, two types of people in the world. There are those who, when presented with a glass that is exactly half full, say: this glass is half full. And then there are those who say: this glass is half empty. The world belongs, however, to those who can look at the glass and say: What's up with this glass? Excuse me? Excuse me? This is my glass? I don't think so. My glass was full! And it was a bigger glass!"
- arcatek 12y agoThat could be a Cave Johnson quote. "When life gives you lemons, don’t make lemonade. Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don’t want your damn lemons, what the hell am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life’s manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I’m the man who’s gonna burn your house down! With the lemons! I’m gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!"
- kazinator 12y agoWhen life gives you lemons, leave them where they are and demand their equivalent in cash instead. As soon as you drive them out of the GM dealership, their value cuts in half.
- rodgerd 12y agoThis rathr sems to miss the point of Patchett's body of work as a selection.
- vanderZwan 12y agoI don't know, I'm pretty sure he was referring to himself as the third type of person when he wrote that: http://www.theguardian.com/books/2014/sep/24/terry-pratchett-angry-not-jolly-neil-gaiman http://www.theguardian.com/books/2014/sep/24/terry-pratchett...
- colin_jack 12y agoI think the quote does miss the point, its almost a call for more wall street banker style behavior. As mentioned abovce though thats not really in keeping with his books, and the quote is misleading as it omits the last part.
- rodgerd 12y agoIt's the sort of thing Pratchett offers as a sour reflection on the world as it is, rather than the world as it ought to be. The last part, as you note, is: "And at the other end of the bar the world is full of the other type of person, who has a broken glass, or a glass that has been carelessly knocked over (usually by one of the people calling for a larger glass) or who had no glass at all, because he was at the back of the crowd and had failed to catch the barman's eye." ...and both quotes are offered in The Truth, which offers more than a few critical comments around the glass-should-be-bigger set.

- samspot 12y agoThat glass is not suitable for it's contents.
- david-given 12y ago"The only things known to go faster than ordinary light is monarchy, according to the philosopher Ly Tin Weedle. He reasoned like this: you can’t have more than one king, and tradition demands that there is no gap between kings, so when a king dies the succession must therefore pass to the heir instantaneously. Presumably, he said, there must be some elementary particles - kingons, or possibly queons - that do this job, but of course succession sometimes fails if, in mid-flight, they strike an anti-particle, or republicon. His ambitious plans to use his discovery to send messages, involving the careful torturing of a small king in order to modulate the signal, were never fully expounded because, at that point, the bar closed." --- Mort
- colin_jack 12y agoThat quote didn't seem like him at all, in fact it seemed to be showing a mindset completely at odds with his books, quick google indicates you maybe missed a key part: "And at the other end of the bar the world is full of the other type of person, who has a broken glass, or a glass that has been carelessly knocked over (usually by one of the people calling for a larger glass) or who had no glass at all, because he was at the back of the crowd and had failed to catch the barman's eye"
- walshemj 12y agoWhich is more like the average techie/engineer ;-(
