In fact, Steve eventually decided that giving recognition to the designers was a bad idea. Nowadays, Apple has abolished programmer names in the "About Box", and closely guards the names of their designers, allowing only a select few employees to interact with the press at all.
I wonder why he decided giving recognition in this way was a bad idea. It's a shame the thousands of people coming up with ideas, building hardware and implementing software at Apple aren't credited anywhere.

- cma 12y agoWell he went to lengths to establish anti-competitive no-hiring agreements between the major tech firms. Crediting employees just might mean someone would find it that much easier to hire them away and pay them a competitive wage.
- amagumori 12y agowhether it was a calculated decision or not, this choice certainly helped build steve jobs' brand at the expense of everyone else, to the point where he's still widely seen as solely responsible for apple's success.
- alphakappa 12y agoAs noted in the story, it's hard to draw the line. There are many people involved in making the product what it is, and why stop at the designers anyway? What about the people who actually implemented it, the people who did the grunt jobs to help the implementers implement it, the operations people, the marketing people who came up with the campaigns and so on. In the end you will have something similar to the credit roll of a movie, and it will still probably forget someone.
- knucklesandwich 12y agoWhy is this more problematic for software than it is for film, tv, or video games? Everyone getting their own pull quotes in media exposure is one thing, but it seems like a huge cop out to pretend like crediting the whole team in an about screen/modal is infeasible.
- gcb0 12y agoif jobs was openly breaking every (of the few) work laws the US have to prevent other companies from hiring his employees, why would he make it even easier by painting targets on them?
