I use this a lot for report-builder interfaces, and according to my personal experience SQLAlchemy in Python maps really well to raw SQL while adding a lot in terms of DRY, portability and security. I guess the underlying question is how much your development style involves meta-programming (and how much someone enjoy reinventing the wheel with their own query builder engine instead of trusting a mature ORM).
