Ask HN: private source control with access to metadata/comments for portability?

Hi,
I'm looking for a private source control service to support group development (for a new site in python/GAE, http://www.appenginecash.com/ )
I tried GitHub before but it doesn't let you download all the metadata (like comments) if you want to switch to another provider, horror of horrors.
If I'm going to pay for something, I want to be able to switch in future and bring all the data with me.
Any advice on other options?
Thanks!!
