ASK HN: Is 30 days enough to create an HRS using .Net
Hi everyone
Yesterday was my first day of my internship in a small company, I was assigned to create a hotel reservation system to be used by the hotel's staff only so no web site required only a dekstop app. They said only the conception and modelling of the project would require more than 1 month, therefore I can not begin the development of the application during this internship.
The problem is my school requires me to bring a finished project and do a final report and present it to them.
Do you think they don't want/trust me to do the development part or 1 month is really not enough?
Thanks
- PaulHoule 12y agoI think it depends on your experience and the "bag of tricks" you bring. For instance, VB.NET is pretty good for rapid prototyping of form-based applications, but if you are new to .NET you could easily spend a lot of time just getting your development system up and running. Also you need to consider the "fit-and-finish" work such as developing and testing installers. If you are really good you could take an 'Agile' approach and have something really running in 1 mo but it would probably not be done at that point.
- Lourayad 12y agoI am required to use UML I don't know if an Agile approach could work because all the design is done in the beginning..I wish I could skip this but unfortunately I can't.
- DanielStraight 12y agoI can create a hotel reservation system in the amount of time it takes me to walk to the supply room and grab a calendar and a pen. I could also work full time for the rest of my life on one. It all depends on the requirements. No one is going to be able to tell you how long it will take for your particular system. That said, the person you should be talking to is whoever is supervising your internship. Let them know what your school requires and ask them what you can do to meet that requirement. Then talk to your school and ask if what the company proposed meets your credit requirement. Then continue going back and forth until you find a mutually satisfactory arrangement. Maybe the model of the system could count as a finished project for your school. The only people who know are the people you have access to and we do not, so we can't answer this question for you.
- Lourayad 12y agoWill do thanks for the advice!
- AdamMcQuaid 12y agoAs /u/DanielStraight said, it all depends on the requirements for your project. In the meantime though, I would recommend working out some prototypes, both to brush up your skills and also to get some ideas on the architecture/design. Since you mentioned that this is a desktop app, maybe try out some tools/frameworks that you might end up using in the final project. - Lourayad 12y agoThanks a lot for those repos, will use Squirrel and MahApps :)

- Lourayad 12y agoArgh..this is way ahead of me for now...I need to learn about RESTful apis first right ? I never did any networking using WinFomrs or WPF either..Why would I need networking services this in a desktop application? Reservations and all other tasks are done by the hotel staff.
- ghuntley 12y agore: MvvmCross && ReactiveUI MvvmCross = imperative programming, mutable state in your UI & pub/sub messaging based API design. ReactiveUI = declarative/functional reactive programming, reactive extensions & subscription/observable based API design. Considering he is a intern/newbie, just getting started and has a deadline of a month I wouldn't suggest these two at all. Both projects have a vibrant community but have not crossed the chasm, samples and documentation needed to onboard absolute newbies is far and few between. If you are targeting only WPF then check out https://github.com/Caliburn-Micro/Caliburn.Micro https://github.com/Caliburn-Micro/Caliburn.Micro instead. re: MahApps.Metro Highly recommended, amazing library. re: Networking Stack Use: - https://github.com/paulcbetts/refit https://github.com/paulcbetts/refit - https://github.com/akavache/Akavache https://github.com/akavache/Akavache - https://github.com/paulcbetts/Fusillade https://github.com/paulcbetts/Fusillade - https://github.com/michael-wolfenden/Polly https://github.com/michael-wolfenden/Polly Glue to them together as such http://arteksoftware.com/resilient-network-services-with-xamarin/ http://arteksoftware.com/resilient-network-services-with-xam...
