The Lytro example seems very dubious. Their solution has a lot of additional hardware in it - you wouldn't be able to package it into a Project Ara type device without having some kind of backpack anyway. From their point of view, it'd then be cheaper to also include the CPU, screen etc - a more unified hardware base to build software for.
