Reminds me a lot of The Lifecycle of Software Objects, by Ted Chiang (http://subterraneanpress.com/magazine/fall_2010/fiction_the_lifecycle_of_software_objects_by_ted_chiang/ http://subterraneanpress.com/magazine/fall_2010/fiction_the_...). It makes sense that people would bond with AI specifically designed to act as a pet strongly enough to want to give it a funeral, but it's amazing to me that it's happening already.
