Just wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed reading your article and will probably crib shamelessly from it in the future☺ I will second the value of a work sample. It's so simple that it feels incredible that we didn't do them in the past. What my team __hasn't_ is issue the exact same work-sample problem; you make a compelling argument for doing that, so I think that we'll implement it.
