A quote from the Hacker News Guidelines (http://ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html http://ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html):
"What to submit:
Anything that good hackers would find interesting. That includes more than hacking and startups. If you had to reduce it to a sentence, the answer might be: anything that gratifies one's intellectual curiosity. "
There aren't many other topics that have such a far-reaching effect on so many people, and have such a large body of scientific (and otherwise) research behind it. As such it doesn't just appeal to my intellectual curiosity (although it does), it also concerns me on a far more 'real' level of realising that decisions I make now will have serious effects on people all around the world - many of whom will be much less able, due to geography, politics and finance, to adapt to the changes that will occur.
To my mind the science will appeal to many hackers.
And the many solutions that will be required are extremely suited to the startup culture and the hacker mindset.
- RiderOfGiraffes 17y agoFrom the same guidelines: Off-Topic: ... If they'd cover it on TV news, it's probably off-topic. I'm remaining impartial, not stating my opinion, but I thought I would balance your selective quotation.
- icey 17y agoAs soon as I see people pasting from the guidelines (ESPECIALLY the "anything good hackers will find interesting" bit), I know that the thread doesn't belong here.
- TomOfTTB 17y agoThe points in this article basically boil down to this... - Global Warming is real and undisputed by mainstream scientists - Greenland is in big trouble because of it (and here's a few stories of the people who would be impacted) - We must curb our carbon emissions There's no discussion of the science, no mention of other ways to solve the problem, and no intellectual thought at all really. It's a human interest piece designed to create an emotional response.
