I don't think it matters so much. I have friends doing Programming work with the Title "Software Engineer" and I'm a Software Engineer (Just filed my application for P.Eng.) who has a "Programmer" job title.
Things are pretty much still treated interchangeably here in most lines of work so unless you're in a business that traditionally relies on engineering work and stamps you wont get any preferential treatment.
- tjl 12y agoIt's entirely possible that a job might require a P.Eng, but that would mostly be at the company's discretion. For instance, if you were working on mission critical code like avionics or power plant control. I'm not sure as to the rules for requiring a software P.Eng. I don't think they're entirely set yet. I really should look through my association's rules more. If you're in an engineering department at a university, getting the P.Eng is advisable as they need a certain amount to be accredited. I think in that case there's a pay bump.
