I hadn't heard about that oil rig worker, but unless there are details missing from this article, it seems a terrible shame he was fired. Given what he describes, I would have likely done the same thing, used whatever means I had at my disposal to try to notify some relevant official. His only mistake might have been making too clear a declaration in his email that what he'd seen was a plane, when his later description makes that appear less certain. Still, it is also easy to understand how, in the moment, I might have again done the same thing. The best explanation I could find of why he was fired was that his email caused computer problems related to the resulting traffic, which was in no way his fault.
