The way I learned PHP is by developing two apps that I really wanted to build. I set aside three weeks for each app and coded PHP day and night. One thing I realized was the importance of rhythm. If I code for a day and then come back to it after a week, it was almost like I was starting from zero. Coding for sometime continuously is a good way to pickup a new language.
