I'm currently using Ubuntu 14.04 at work and 14.10 on my personal laptop. For a few months I've been using it exclusively at home, without having the need to dual-boot Windows.
Even though I've wanted to get a MacBook Pro for the last couple of years, I've started to change my mind because Ubuntu simply rocks. First of all, it's really fast. My personal laptop is 5 years old and Ubuntu seems to be more reliable and a lot faster than Windows. Moreover, I've seen benchmarks suggesting that for some applications it's also faster than OS X.
I've tried out different desktop environments but I'm sticking with Unity for now. It's really simple to use and clean. I do most of my work in the terminal anyways.
If you guys want to make Unity look better, I suggest trying out the Numix themes and icon packs. They change Unity almost completely and make it look a lot stylish. It also works in Gnome3.
In what regards terminal emulators, I recommend Terminator. I use it because it allows arranging terminals in grids, which comes in handy especially at work. It is based on Gnome Terminal.
