How to protect my original web app IP from patent trolls?

Do you supermen and superwomen recommend patenting or attempting to patent all original ideas I have for a webapp I'm working on? I read a while ago that copyrights are more-or-less automatic now if you are the first to employ an idea. Another method suggests drawing out your ideas as clearly as possible and mailing them to yourself, so that there is a clearly dated postmark on the envelope which you can use to verify the date of your idea's conception/use.
