I found the icons distracting on OS X as well - luckily, LibreOffice ships with alternative icon sets. Go to Preferences > LibreOffice > View, choose "Sifr" as

I found the icons distracting on OS X as well - luckily, LibreOffice ships with alternative icon sets. Go to Preferences > LibreOffice > View, choose "Sifr" as your icon style. That's the look they should have shipped it with by default.
