Surely it depends on the type of person you're talking to. Some people like long, detailed discussions with others, including references, etc, and find it frustrating when that doesn't happen. Others don't. I don't believe there's a 'right'. Different strokes for different folks. Though when I don't need to send an email AND the receiver doesn't need to get it, I totally agree.
