Places like Lockheed Martin pay a premium to have PhDs run their research programs, (credentials matter to the customers) and if you know how to program you will have an enormous advantage over the other PIs who are mostly not programmers. You'll make a decent wage and work on interesting stuff.
- chriskanan 12y agoThis is definitely true at NASA. A PhD is tremendously helpful there. You will almost certainly be making a higher starting wage than someone with just a BS or MS, and you have many opportunities for advancement as a PI down the road. They are often looking for people with programming skills.
