I spent some time on Quirky ~3 years ago, trying to push designs for my desk 'leg hammock.' At the time it suffered from the problem of everyone ganging together to only vote for people who were regular users in the community who had gotten to know each other. It disadvantaged a lot of people who had great ideas and designs, who weren't interested in all the effort to build 'alliances.' The Quirky team acknowledged it was a problem in some private emails, but I really don't know if they ever changed the system to minimize that, maybe they did? It's a shame because I would have used it more if they had solved that problem.
