The US public spending as a percent of GDP is around Canada's: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Government_spending http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Government_spending And almost double Chinas. Even after you take out the military there is no basis in saying that the US has raced to the bottom.
