I agree that commercialization has perverse incentives...but its a little ironic that we are talking about security research on commercial products. There is an academic side to security research in CoSci, but most security research is basically poking commercial products to see where they fail, and if that failure can be controlled. That being said, Microsoft should open source MAGE. It's sounds cool.
