I use pass [0]. It is a great password manager (and I use it for that), but it also works great as a journal. I use a different GPG key for the journal than the passwords. Writing in the journal is as simple as pass edit journal/201501 and vim opens up with this month's file. It is safe to back up, as everything is encrypted with GPG.
