True in part, but that didn't stop these thieves from smashing the window and stealing a little bit of stuff before running away in fear (we had prominent signs). An actual working alarm helps, but I suspect the signs do most of the legwork. Fortunately the thieves got caught and were forced to pay compensation years later.
