A Small Box to Stop Hackers from Turning Your Smart Home Against You
- LukeB_UK 12y agoIn the UK, from my experience at least, providers combine the modem and router into one device. In this case, the Numa wouldn't really cover it and you'd need to buy a switch as well.
- jdboyd 12y agoComcast and Verizon like to combine them as well in the US. Of course, we have more cable companies and phone companies than those two, but I'm less aware of what they deliver.
- Quanticles 12y agoIf you have a Comcast modem then you're paying too much - they charge $10/mo for something that can be bought on Amazon for less than $80
- Quanticles 12y agoYou could put this between the device and another router. Someone who would use a device like this would also have a decent router regardless of what their ISP provides.
- imw 12y agoNot uncommon in the states, but there are workarounds. We are working on a passthrough USB HFC/coax media converter. Still won't solve the problem 100% of the time, but doing DOCSIS decode and scanning at Layer 2 is possible in a lot of cases.
- wmf 12y agoWhy is this not also a router?
- iwwr 12y agoIt could be a switch with a firewall. The article also says zero configuration.
- joshu 12y agoIt looks like a pcengines Alix board. I am using kne as a router.
- imw 12y agoClose. It's a PC Engine APU. In our testing, quite a bit faster than the Alix.
- imw 12y agoWell, it is. Just doesn't haven't wifi at the moment. There are two onboard mini-pci slots, so it'd definitely easy to add on (or two) radios. If folks are interested, we may we produce a version that has a/b/g/n or ac wireless.
- tiatia 12y ago"Numa will retail for $349." Sounds pricey. The article is quite vague about how it works. I guess you can achieve the same with some configuration on FREETZ http://freetz.org/ http://freetz.org/ with a Fritzbox. http://en.avm.de/products/fritzbox/fritzbox-7390/ http://en.avm.de/products/fritzbox/fritzbox-7390/
- imw 12y agoIt is definitely possible to arrive at a similar setup if you are technical. Numa is built entirely from free software. Our hope is to make these tools available to people who are not so technical.
