Most of this jives with what I have heard from two Netflix engineers, except for the work/life balance. Both folks that I talked to said that Netflix was very much a place where they tried to work you as hard as possible until you burned out, but that this was balanced by the exceptional compensation. I wonder if the culture has changed or if only certain roles are like that?
- tzakrajs 12y agoThe culture at Netflix is discontinuous (more specifically: Customer Service vs Engineering) and has peaks and valleys as you navigate the landscape. Some teams work harder than others. There were definitely top engineers that worked less than 40 hours and top engineers that worked more than 40 hours.
- jedberg 12y agoNetflix has definitely afforded me the most work/life balance I've ever had. If you are still here at 6pm, it's pretty much empty.
- erobbins 12y agobut what time do you arrive in the morning?
- jedberg 12y agoLately around 11 because I just had a baby, but before that between 9 and 10 usually. If you get here before 10 you can get still get prime parking. People basically work 9 to 5. Yes, some people will put in a couple hours at home or on the weekend, but the nice thing is that no one expects you to be there, so you can definitely get all your "group work" done from 9 to 5.
- ma2rten 12y agoAt which location is that?
- jedberg 12y agoLos Gatos, which is where almost all the engineers are.
- skrebbel 12y ago> Netflix has definitely afforded me the most work/life balance I've ever had. Weren't you the guy who basically ran all Reddit tech stack, alone, day and night, for years in a row though? :-)
- jedberg 12y agoI had the whole reddit team to help, but yes, I was on call 24/7/365 for 4 years. :)
- reledi 12y agoYou HN bio says > Now I hang out and enjoy technology, advise startups and some other stuff (including working at Netflix as the Site Reliability Lead) Which gives me the impression you work part time (or at least reduced hours) at Netflix. If that's the case, it may not be a good work/life comparison to other experiences you've had.
- jedberg 12y agoNope, definitely full time. :) The rest of that is extracurricular.
