I tried really hard to make an old XP machine last until Win 7 came out, but the hard drive decided otherwise. Having heard too many horror stories about Vista the first thing I did with the cheapest replacement machine money could buy was spend 4 hours going through 99 performance hacks for Vista and deciding which to install. I would say it is now adequate, while still having a few Vista annoyances. I upgraded my work desktop to Win 7 last week. It's what Vista should have been.
