The purpose is in my opinion to harden peoples resilience against criticism on their beliefs / ways of life. People should accept that their beliefs or points of view can be criticised. It's what makes an open society and freedom of speech possible. But somehow many muslims cannot accept this fact, even if they do live in a western society.
Can anyone from the EU country or France, depict a cartoon, of certain Queen riding a donkey with an erect penis?
If anyone does make it, I guess there would be an uproar and anger among that nation and for the right reasons too.
Yes, cartoons like that were (and are) being made and yes occasionally there is some anger, but no one with a western mindset would respond with violence to such a cartoon.
But is it really free speech or troll journalism?
Trolling is free speech as well, like it or not.
In the end, again, how this specific cartoon helped humanity or any of the cause?
I hope it helps in making muslims in the west more open to criticism against their religion. And hopefully the public discussion makes it clear that violence is (in the west) not an appropriate response against criticism in any way. If one beliefs violence is an appropriate response, one should choose to not live in such an advanced society.
