Letting the colours and fonts get in the way of something you admit 'could be amazing' seems a little short-sighted.

Letting the colours and fonts get in the way of something you admit 'could be amazing' seems a little short-sighted.
- kpmah 12y agoIt's also hard to navigate and the documentation seems quite poor. It's a shame because it looks like excellent tech.
- jallmann 12y agoHaven't used js_of_ocaml personally, but documentation for Ocsigen's other projects is excellent, such as lwt. Took a quick glance through the js_of_ocaml docs and they seem similarly comprehensive. Note this is API reference documentation and not a thorough tutorial on how to use the library, although the js_of_ocaml manual looks good. In this case, it does help to be familiar with how OCaml libraries are typically organized and documented. Are you looking for a quickstart-type walkthrough?
- kpmah 12y agoIt's entirely possible it's due to my lack of familiarity with OCaml, but I found it tough going. I intend to try a side project using it soon, so I'll have some more in-depth feedback.
- auggierose 12y agoActually, I don't think so. If they were sloppy with that, they were probably sloppy also in other matters that might matter for web development.
- saosebastiao 12y agoOne time, I almost bought a very cool robotic prototyping platform, but the documentation was only in German. In retrospect, my hesitance was a little short sighted as well...I mean, I could have just learned German, right? Usability matters, even if it is something as simple as font choices and colors. If you make it hard(er) to use a product, you've created a barrier to entry.
- amirmc 12y agoAre you seriously comparing docs in a different language to a colour scheme you dislike!? That is an utterly ridiculous comparison.
- saosebastiao 12y agoAnd yet the end effect is the same: I dont use the product. When you want people to learn your new new framework, complete with all the new idioms and terminology and workflows, the last thing you should burden your users with is bizarre asthetics. It makes it hard to scan docs, identify features, and focus their attention where you want it. You could take a barebones default wordpress blog and write your docs in that and it would be a reduced barrier to entry.
- jallmann 12y agoThe only "problem" is the cute color scheme (each Ocsigen projects gets its own scheme), but so what. Believe me, you don't notice the colors when using these docs for Real Work. The content here is solid; complaining about aesthetics from a quick skim is the equivalent of judging a book by its cover.
- Scarbutt 12y agoNot that I'm complaining but to me it looks like some skin beauty creams website.
