Nah dude.I get what you are saying, but if that is the case, why are male villians often grotesque, but female villians always (or almost anyway) just as sexy as female heros?
Heros are drawn for you to identify with as a power fantasy. The female characters aren't about who you want to be. It's about what you want to see.
That's why superman gets to be fully dressed, whereas super girl shows her belly and wears a skirt.
And even if you were right, that would mean that the ideal female super hero is usually wearing a skimpy outfit showing skin, and what does that say?
- xienze 12y agoWhat are your feelings on romance novel covers?
- lsiebert 12y agoI think http://shopbuy.org/static/category/original/romance-novels/EFMRN-Chapter-Four.jpg http://shopbuy.org/static/category/original/romance-novels/E... sums my feelings up nicely. Romance Covers are, however, an entirely different topic.
- xienze 12y agoI see them as the other side of the coin. Comic books are targeted towards men and sexualize women, romance novels are targeted towards women and sexualize men. Sex sells.
- vidarh 12y agoWith respect to books, there are vast selections that mainly target men to balance out the romance book genre. With respect to comics, the selection targeting women is much smaller. It's not at all the same.
- xienze 12y agoThe selection targeting women is smaller because it's been tried. Over. And. Over. And women just don't care about comic books.
- normloman 12y agoIn Japan there are entire genres of comics targeted towards women. Now whether they are any good, or any less sexist than male comics is debatable. Am I supposed to believe that women love stories told with words, but are incapable of appreciating stories told with pictures?
- xienze 12y agoIn Japan there's entire genres of comics about tentacle rape. People are different in other countries. Comics for women have been tried here. Over and over. They haven't worked. American women just aren't drawn to them. Sometimes it just is what it is!
- normloman 12y agoAgreed. Expecting cultures to change and adapt is for suckers!
- xienze 12y agoSometimes you've gotta pick your battles. We're talking about comic books here. Who really cares? Why do they "need" to change?
- Fomite 12y agoAny why shouldn't comic books (and other media) be the battle some of us pick? Why do they need to not change? Why are you assuming that one cannot try to change comic books and also fight against things you've decided are more important?
- lsiebert 12y agoThe flip side of romances, if there is one, isn't comic books. More like letters to penthouse. Romances are supposed to be for adults, and are meant to be sensual or erotic. Like I said, different topic.
- xienze 12y agoI think you might argue that comics are really "meant for adults" these days as they're the only people reading them anymore.
